Due to Kal-El's appearance as Superman alongside Jon Kent and Kara Zor-El at the United Nations, this story must take place after Kal-El Returns Special #1/2 where he announces his return.

Despite this issue being labelled as "Kal-El Returns, Part 1" this issue actually takes place after part 2 in Superman: Son of Kal-El #16.
