OVERVIEW

The batarang is a throwing weapon used by Batman and his associates. It is shaped like a boomerang, but has certain bat-like characteristics. There are different versions of batarangs for different purposes. They are generally used to knock criminals out, but have other uses as well, and can be fitted with a tracer device.

One story attributes the creation of the batarang to an Australian circus performer named Lee Collins. He taught Batman how to throw boomerangs, and gave the Caped Crusader a bat-themed boomerang as a present. -Detective Comics #244
