Discovering that she was the daughter of a criminal - the Cluemaster - caused Steph to decide to fight back and become a hero. Using rough and ready techniques, she often encountered Robin, becoming good friends with the young hero, and developing a romantic attachment to him even as she improved her skills. For a brief period of time, she was being trained both by Batman and Black Canary, but Batman then made it clear that he did not believe she was ready for life as a hero.

However, when Tim Drake (by this point her boyfriend) retired as Robin, Stephanie was determined to replace him, and for a time was trained as such by Batman. In time, he fired her once more, and shortly after this, Stephanie was believed to have been killed by Black Mask during a gang war that Spoiler had accidentally triggered by following one of Batman's 'war games' plans.
