Synopsis:

In San Francisco, a mouse hunts for food, crawls up to a sleeping homeless man and steals a piece of his food. As it scurries away, an blue glow is seen in the eyes of the mouse.

Meanwhile, Captain Atom battles an unnamed foe in an armored suit in Chicago. The villain blasts energy pulses at the Captain, which only prove to strengthen his abilities. Captain Atom realizes that he can change the foe's armor at a molecular level, turning it into dirt. As he does so, Captain Atom notices that his hand is partially and temporarily disintegrating too.

Captain Atom returns to his home-base, The Continuum, located in Kansas. He speaks with an assistant at the facility, Dr. Ranita Carter. He then meets with the head of the facility, Dr. Heinrich Megala. Captain Atom explains the molecular alteration and its affect on his own hand. Megala theorizes that Captain Atom's powers are developed by atoms splitting and rejoining repeatedly. Now, he thinks the bonds are not reforming as quickly, allowing for the disintegration. He warns Captain Atom that use of his powers could lead to this effect occurring in his brain, which would cause him to cease to exist.

Dr. Carter warns the duo that a volcano has been detected in New York City. Captain Atom responds, but first must stop a nuclear meltdown at the Indian Point Energy Center. He is able to absorb the energy from the plant and moves on to respond to the volcano in Manhattan. There, he absorbs the heat, transmutes lavs to snow, and eventually absorbs even more energy. The result is a dissipation of Captain Atom, an effect he relates to dying.

Back in San Francisco, the homeless man finds the mouse who stole his food but before he can punish the animal, it mutates into a giant monster.
