OVERVIEW

Cerberus is the three-headed Hellhound guarding one of Hell's gates.

HISTORY

The guardian of the Greek underworld Hades (and to some extent also Hell), Cerberus is the three-headed canine son of the demon mother Echidna. He stands at the gate and devours anyone who attempts to cross the Styx without paying Charon the Ferryman, or anyone who tries to leave the realm of the dead without permission.

As one of his Twelve Labors, Herakles allegedly descended into the underworld, defeated Cerberus, and brought him to the surface world as proof of a feat accomplished. Cerberus was let back into Hades, but has since been defeated by Earth’s heroes more than once; he was first charmed by the lyre of Orpheus [Sandman Special #1] and later by the pipes of Arak’s satyr friend Satyricus [[[Arak, Son of Thunder 12#|Arak, Son of Thunder #12]]], had one head (temporarily) torn off by Aquaman [Aquaman Vol. 5 #46], was seemingly slain by the Enchantress [Day of Judgement #2], and was finally knocked out by Harley Quinn [Harley Quinn #22].

POWERS AND WEAPONS

Cerberus’ main weapons are his three heads with their sharp fangs. He also has a tail with a scorpion-like stinger. His size and appearance seems to vary, but he is generally much bigger than a normal human being. He also has some sort of regenerative power, which enabled him to grow a new head once Aquaman had torn off the original one.
