HISTORY

The story of Ghrelk was told to the MadGod Sector 3600 by Sinestro. With this tale, and the hundreds more before it, Sinestro wished to show the imprisoned sector that the Guardians and their Green Lantern Corps were fallible. The containment of the Oan sciencell could easily be overcome by something as powerful as 3600. This was 1000th tale.

Ghrelk was the Green Lantern of Naktos, a world advanced in technology. Having a record of heroic service that extended back through generations, it was time for him to retire.

Ghrelk had become unable to perform his duties as a Green Lantern. His growing confusion and resulting inaction led to massive destruction.

Recognizing his friend as a threat to himself and all of Naktos, Varix, commander of the local law enforcement organization, went to talk to the ancient Green Lantern. Inadvertently, Ghrelk lashed out in anger. Varix was unharmed, and Ghrelk flew off in shock.

Varix pursued his friend. When Ghrelk could not discern if Naktos was threatened or not, he gave the power ring to Varix. After defeating the threat, Varix returned his friend Ghrelk home to rest.

Sinestro told this tale to show that the Green Lanterns who use the Guardians' power can fail. After this tale was told the sentient sector came alive, if only for a moment. Sinestro went on to tell the 1001st tale, of Abin Sur and the Empire of Tears. - Green Lantern Corps Annual #2/3

Ghrelk was memorialized in the Crypts of the Green Lantern Corps on Oa.
