OVERVIEW

A villain of the Golden Age who often encountered the masked mystery men of the 1940's, Joar Makent used a cold-producing gun as his weapon. His son now continues his villainous legacy.

HISTORY

Shortly after the end of World War II, Dr. Joar Mahkent returned to America aboard a steam liner. As the liner began to dock, it appeared to become frozen in the harbor. Coming to investigate, the first Green Lantern did battle with a villain wielding a cryro-gun capable of casting freezing rays. Calling himself the Icicle, the villain appeared to have killed Dr. Mahkent. Believing the costumed criminal was instead a gangster also aboard, Green Lantern battled him and discovered that he was actually Dr. Mahkent. At the climax of the battle, the Icicle fell apparently to his death into Gotham Harbor.

Moments from death, The Icicle was rescued by Johnny Sorrow, who extracted a promise that he would aid Sorrow some time in the future. Seemingly returning from the dead, he battled Green Lantern again and then joined the second incarnation of the Injustice Society. Escaping from prison, he began to plan for his retirement by taking a job killing Starman for some Opal City mobsters. He was caught and imprisoned, where his first wife divorced him, living off selling his patents and his research.

Joar Mahkent remarried just over 20 years ago, but left his wife when he found out she was pregnant. Their son Cameron's DNA was altered due to his father’s exposure to exotic cryogenic chemicals and gases. The elder Mahkent had little to do with his son after his mother's death in childbirth.

Many years later, during the first years of the newest heroic age, he was encouraged to come out of retirement by his two companions The Fiddler and The Wizard. His plans for a comeback career ended prematurely by the combined efforts of the newly formed Justice League and a reactivated Justice Society. On several other occasions, The Icicle teamed with other members of the Injustice Society only to find himself back in prison or on the run. He found himself aiding two other villains - Mirror Master and Maaldor - during the Crisis, only to be killed.

POWERS AND WEAPONS

The Icicle was a pioneer in the field of cryogenics, developing a portable gun capable of projecting a beam of ice near or at absolute zero. He sometimes used a glove-based smaller unit.

The Icicle was a poor hand to hand combatant.
