Synopsis:

Finding himself transformed into the substance he is named for, Sand seeks help at Tylerco, where he is assisted by Dr Iker, a former enemy of Hourman, and Rebecca Tyler, Hourman's grand-neice. It seems that as a result of an accident many decades ago, Sand is now a silicon-based lifeform, and is developing a number of related powers. While at Tylerco, he also encounters Michael Holt, the new Mr. Terrific, and invites him to meet the Justice Society.
On his way back to the Justice Society's headquarters which are being remodelled by John Stewart, Sand senses a disturbance in the Earth's geomagnetic fields and is drawn to its source in Kinambura, Africa. Here he discovers a costumed villain called Geomancer threatening the locals in an attempt to get them to leave, an action he has been paid to take by a group called the Council. Using his new abilities, Sand is able to defeat him. Meanwhile, in Milwaukee, James Rice is confronted by his foster son Obsidian, who attacks him with his shadow powers. This is apparently the first action in a campaign to get to Sentinel, Obsidian's biological father.
