Synopsis:

Lois Lane considers the new heroic age, and in particular, Metropolis' champion Superman, who is currently experiencing some antagonism from Lexcorp's city security troops. Their boss, Lex Luthor, has his fingers in many pies at once: he is constructing a new building (Luthor Towers), he is attempting to buy out a scientist (Morgan Wilde) and he is romancing superstar Dolores Winters. Lois Lane happens to be interviewing Wilde about his discoveries, which are connected with some sort of electrical field which may be ectoplasm or even the human soul, when he is visited by Luthor's heavies to try and persuade him to sell Luthor his research. He is ruffled by their visit and sends Lane away, but not before he gives her a photograph which reminds him of happier times.
Later, Superman encounters a criminal called Madness, who is able to escape from the scenes of his crimes by causing temporary insanity in innocent bystanders. And, that evening, Wilde's wife Barbara is killed by Luthor's men; the scientist takes his revenge by destroying his house with himself and the men still inside, hitting a few buttons on the machine connected with his discoveries before he does so.
