Synopsis:

Gypsy confesses to her old friend J'onn that she used her chameleon-like disguise powers to slip past some Egyptian guards and enter the Sphinx. In the burial chamber inside the statue, she sees heiroglyphs of Egyptian deity Anubis changing into a Martian, and then sees this heiroglyph come alive and beg for release. In addition, she demonstrates how her powers have evolved so that she can mimic the appearance of people she has met of a similar build to herself. J'onn thinks her changing powers and her experience in the tomb may be connected. At some point in the past, some white martians conducted horrific experiments on Earth beings, and a colony of 'greens' set themselves up in Egypt to monitor the situation. He surmises that all human psionic abilities may stem from these long ago genetic experiments. One of J'onn's ancestors - J'ahrl - was part of this colony, and J'onn thinks he somehow resides in the Sphinx and has been awoken by Gypsy's presence. Meanwhile, in London, a gathering of minds begins, a gathering which is concerned that J'onn knows about Gypsy's experience in the Sphinx.
Gypsy and J'onn return to the Sphinx, where J'onn makes contact with J'ahrl, who was imprisoned there by the rest of the colony when he opposed their taking over of human bodies. J'onn is able to release his soul and take it to rest on Mars and then vows to track down the renegades who did this to him and bring them to justice if they still exist.
