INFORMATION

Official Name: Pre-Crisis Multiverse
First Appearance: Flash Vol. 1 #123 (September 1961): "Flash of Two Worlds"
Creators: Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino, et al

OVERVIEW

The so-called "Pre-Crisis Multiverse" consisted on an infinite number of worlds, separated by different vibrational frequencies. This multiverse was systematically destroyed by the Anti-Monitor, until the remaining five universes (Earths-1, 2, 4, S and X) were merged into one. Later events would see a new multiverse created, with universes echoing what had come before.

HISTORY

Billions of years ago the Oan known as Krona, obsessed with learning the origin of the universe, built a device enabling him to look back in time. As he used the device to see the very beginning of the universe, he witnessed a giant hand clutching a galaxy full of stars, but before learning more a terrible cosmic bolt splintered the device and the universe shuttered.

It was believed that this resulted in not only retroactively creating the Antimatter Universe but also causing the single universe to replicate into an infinite Multiverse, where the Earth and all the planets were duplicated. All these universes would inhabit the same space but be separated by different vibrational frequencies. Only the planet known as Oa was without a doppelganger throughout the Multiverse, as its sister planet Qward was located in the Antimatter Universe. Later revelations suggest that neither the Multiverse nor the Antimatter Universe were created as a result of this event, but that Krona's experiment merely broke down the barriers between the universes of the Multiverse and unleashed a wave of evil caused by the exposure of the Antimatter Universe.

Billions of years before Krona's experiment two beings would arise on the moons of Oa and Qward: The Monitor and the Anti-Monitor. Feeding on the evil of the Antimatter Universe the Anti-Monitor would quickly rise to power and take control of Qward. Here he would create an army of warriors who would become known as the Thunderers of Qward and those he believed to be the most evil he transformed into his own personal guard known as the Shadow Demons. As he conquered the worlds of the Antimatter Universe the Anti-Monitor became aware of his positive matter counterpart and the positive matter universe. The Monitor likewise sensed his counterpart and a war that lasted one million years began. A battle which ended in a simultaneous attack which knocked them both unconscious for the next 9 billion years.

With the Anti-Monitor immobilized the Qwardians would themselves grow to become the dominant power in the Antimatter Universe, and as the Weaponers of Qward they would eventually cross paths with the Green Lantern Corps and the Justice League of America.

When Pariah of an unknown world in the Multiverse like Krona attempted to learn the origin of the universe also resulted in an explosion. This time it would result in the destruction of Pariah's universe and the reawakening of the Monitor and the Anti-Monitor. As Pariah's universe perished the Antimatter Universe expanded to fill the void and the Anti-Monitor grew stronger. Realizing this the Anti-Monitor set out to destroy the entire positive matter Multiverse.

The heroes and villains of several worlds of the Multiverse would band together to defeat the Anti-Monitor in the event known as Crisis on Infinite Earths. As a result of the battle several universes would perish and the four remaining (Earths-1, 2, 4, S and X) would be merged into one Earth (also referred to as New Earth).
