HISTORY

In 1965, Roger Hayden shared a prison cell with Charley Halstead, the 1940s criminal known as the Psycho-Pirate. Halstead taught Hayden all he knew about human emotions, and also about the enchanted Medusa Masks, recently uncovered by Kent Nelson on an archaeological expedition. Stealing the Masks, Hayden used them and his knowledge to commit crimes as the new Psycho-Pirate. Although defeated by Dr. Fate (I) and Hourman (I), the Pirate returned to battle the Spectre, the JSA, Infinity, Inc. and the Outsiders (II), and briefly joined the Secret Society of Super-Villains. However, the power of the Medusa Masks slowly drove him insane.

During the Crisis, Psycho-Pirate became a pawn of the evil Anti-Monitor. As a result of this experience, the Pirate is now the only being to remember that today’s singular universe was once, in another reality, a Multiverse with infinite paralel Earths. This knowledge made him even more mad than before and earned him a cell in Arkham Asylum.

Once, the Pirate made an attempt to restore all the Earths that had perished in the Crisis, and although Animal Man persuaded him to cease, it took a lot of his power, making him vanish into thin air. He later returned, though, getting a power boost from the demonic Neron. The Medusa Masks now incorporated in his body, he became something of a "psychic vampire" as which he battled Manhunter (V). However, during the Joker's "Last Laugh" it seemed as if Hayden had returned to his old costume and powers.
