HISTORY

Years ago, the planet Korugar was visited by Green Lantern Jewelius Blak. She was to choose someone from the populace to train as a member of the Green Lantern Corps. - Green Lantern Corps #222

One of the citizens of Korugar saw the opportunity for greatness the Green Lantern presented. Sinestro modeled himself after the alien visitor and soon was her apprentice. Some time later, when Jewelius Blak was incapacitated, Sinestro was contacted by the Guardians of the Universe to become the active Green Lantern of Space Sector 1417. Now a full member of the Corps, he worked alongside such Green Lanterns as Eddore, Tomar-Re, Kilowog, Tomy-Fai, and Salakk.

Sinestro frequently visited Oa, gaining wisdom from the Great Book of Oa, which told of the knowledge of Green Lanterns past, present, and future. He was a respected member of the Green Lantern Corps, considered by the Guardians to be a model of self-control. Sinestro had made his sector the most orderly in the universe. Unfortunately, the Guardians did not know the cost of that order to the people of Korugar.

On his homeworld, the power corrupted him. Over the years, Sinestro gave up any pretense of a secret identity and created a luxurious headquarters for himself. He set himself up as dictator, dissolving the High Council of Korugar. Korugarians would now plead for his favors. One Korugarian, Ki-Mon, was struck down by Sinestro for criticizing the Green Lantern. Even as ruler, Sinestro sought out knowledge that would help him further his goals. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #7

Sinestro was on Oa during the rampage of Legion. He was one of the many Green Lanterns who sought to defend the Guardians from death at the hands of their enemy. The aftermath of the battle with Legion left seven Green Lanterns dead, and only one, Hal Jordan of Earth, to replace the loss. Kilowog was chosen by the Guardians to seek out new recruits. There was still a need for a trainer for Hal Jordan, so the Guardians assigned Sinestro to the task. - Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn #4-6, Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn II #1

Sinestro protected his people by isolating them from the galaxy. Any invading forces were mercilessly attacked and driven off. He forbade Korugar space travel, preferring to keep the population under control on their homeworld. If he could have, Sinestro would have closed off his entire sector to the rest of the universe.

Returning to Korugar meant the populace would stand in celebration of their Green Lantern. Flags and banners draped the sides of buildings. Music heralded his approach. He had further entrenched his presence in society by starting a "Young Lantern Brigade" comprised of the youth of Korugar who would report directly to him. He was greeted by Katma Tui, the model student of his Young Lantern Brigade. Sinestro's calm demeanor soon changed when he stepped on a piece of litter on the grandstand. Before he could lash out at the frightened populace he was summoned to Oa.

The Korugarian Green Lantern had wanted to stay on his world to deal with the disruption of order, but the Guardians had a task for him. He was to train the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. Sinestro objected, he did not want to leave his sector for any length of time. Without his guidance, chaos would result. Still, the Guardians had to be obeyed.

Sinestro travelled to Earth to begin Jordan's training. He found the new Green Lantern in prison, serving a ninety-day sentence for a DWI incident which occurred prior to Jordan's induction into the Corps. The conditions appalled the Korugarian. Sinestro believed his training duties would be harder than he had imagined. - Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn II #1

The two were assigned to Space Sector 131 to dissuade Khund, Dominion, and Citadel representatives from forging an alliance which would monopolize interstellar trading. Despite Sinestro's attempt at diplomacy, the Green Lanterns' interference was not appreciated by the gathered races and hostilities soon broke out. While defending Jordan, Sinestro was blindsided by the Khunds and almost killed by a Dominator. Though he was saved by Jordan, Sinestro was still angered at the rookie's lack of control. With a final warning to the would-be alliance, the Green Lanterns departed. The Khunds swore to exact vengeance on the Korugarian Green Lantern. Their Alien Alliance would have to be formed another day, beyond the reach of the Green Lantern Corps. The Khunds however, would not wait long to strike at Sinestro. Working with Katma Tui, they supplied weapons to the people of Korugar. - Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn II #2

Jordan's life was divided between his training with Sinestro and his time in prison. Although he was exhausted by this dual life, Jordan grew in his capabilities as a Green Lantern. Still, Sinestro felt frustration at his young charge. Sinestro believed the Guardians had recognized his superiority by assigning Jordan to him. He had tried to mold Jordan in his own image, even by altering his costume.

After Korugar failed to respond to three of Sinestro's periodic message beacons, he decided to take Jordan to investigate. The streets were deserted, the parades and the orchestra were gone. The two Green Lanterns were soon under attack by Korugarians armed with Khundish weapons. Sinestro believed his people were under some form of mind control. He believed groups of individual sentients tended to disorder and chaos. Sinestro planned to wipe away the chaos and start over. The people would be broken and tamed. Jordan stopped Sinestro's rampage, trying to reason with him. He had told Sinestro he had called in other Green Lanterns as reinforcements.

This further infuriated Sinestro, who lashed out at Jordan. He believed the Guardians themselves did not understand order. Jordan was an example of this lack of control. It was necessary to destroy that which could not be controlled. To this end he would kill Jordan.

Sinestro let his guard down for an instant, allowing Jordan to get the upper hand. He managed to get control of himself and convinced Jordan that the incident on Korugar was a misunderstanding. His people had been turned against him: that was the only explanation. Sinestro would have to hide until the truth came out. Jordan would also be blamed for the problems on Korugar. They escaped into deep space.

On Korugar, dozens of Green Lanterns arrived to end the uprising. They too were attacked by the populace. Tomar-Re took the apparent leader, Katma Tui, for questioning. She was hostile to the alien Green Lanterns, believing they had come to force themselves on Korugar as Sinestro did. The Green Lanterns soon realized the extent of Sinestro's crimes. They contacted Oa.

The Guardians were shocked by the actions of Sinestro. They would discuss their recruiting and training methods later, for now they would track down the two Green Lanterns. Sinestro and Jordan would be hunted by a trio of robotic enforcers... The Fists of the Guardians. - Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn II #4

Sinestro had found no trace of mind control on Korugar. He could not grasp the fact that his people were unhappy with his rule. The only answer Sinestro had was that they had fallen victim to chaos in his absence. Jordan and Sinestro planned to hide from the Guardians on Earth, in the state prison Jordan was sentenced to. They arrived in the midst of a riot.

One of the inmates held prison counselor Guy Gardner as a hostage for Hal's ring. Although he gained Jordan's ring, it was only for a moment. He was easily beaten by Sinestro. The stress had become too much for Gardner who attacked the defeated prisoner before being pulled off by Jordan. Sinestro wished to wipe their memories when they were interrupted.

The Green Lanterns were tracked through space to Earth. Sinestro and Jordan were placed under arrest and ordered to Oa for investigation of the anti-Green Lantern uprising on the planet Korugar. The Fists of the Guardians were distracted by the rioting prisoners, and Sinestro made his escape. Jordan agreed to stay where he was to await the summons from Oa. The Fists of the Guardians pursued Sinestro.

Sinestro was stopped before he could jump into subspace, and finally caught after a few miles' chase. In addition to the prior charges against Sinestro, the Fists of the Guardians added flight from arrest, assault on arresting officers, and needless damage to a sector not under his jurisdiction. Bound and gagged, Sinestro was brought to Oa for judgment.

Tomar-Re prosecuted the case, but Sinestro decided to defend himself. Jordan was brought as Sinestro's witness, to testify that the Korugarian had trained him in the ways of order. When Tomar-Re cross examined Jordan the court heard of Sinestro's expectations of the people of Korugar, the demand for their worship. Jordan believed that Sinestro had kept things too controlled, which led to open revolt. This led to an outburst from Sinestro about the need for order on Korugar.

The next witness was Katma Tui of Korugar, called by Tomar-Re. She spoke of the protection with tightening control by Sinestro. Though she had once believed in Green Lantern, she wanted her people to live again. Sinestro's reaction was quite different than it was with Jordan. He appeared hurt when facing Katma Tui.

The Guardians of the Universe reached their decision. Sinestro was found guilty of misuse of his Guardian granted power. He would be stripped of his power ring and honors. Sinestro would be placed beyond the reach of the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps. He would be banished to the antimatter universe of Qward. - Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn II #6, Green Lantern Vol. 2 #7

This completely unhinged Sinestro. He saw the Guardians too had succumbed to chaos. Sinestro believed the Corps had turned against him; he swore to become the bringer of chaos. With a burst of emerald energy, Sinestro dissolved into nothingness, crossing the gateway between universes. The Guardians needed a new Green Lantern for Space Sector 1417. Tomar-Re recommended Katma Tui for the task. The trial was adjourned. - Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn II #6

The positive matter universe would not be free of the renegade for long.

The arrival of a deposed Green Lantern on Qward did not go unnoticed. The Weaponers of Qward had tried without success to create their own power rings. Sinestro rose in power in Qward, allying himself with the dread Weaponers. With their technology, Sinestro would strike back at their mutual foes, the Guardians of the Universe.

Sinestro wished to prove himself to the Weaponers by destroying one of their common enemies, the Green Lantern of Earth. He struck at Hal Jordan by causing the one hundred thousand citizens of Valdale, California to vanish.

The renegade Green Lantern knew of the weaknesses of the power ring and exploited those faults in his plans. Sinestro's ego clouded his judgment. He was unprepared for Jordan's resourcefulness and was captured in an emerald energy bubble. Following the Guardians' orders, Jordan left Sinestro imprisoned in Qward. There, the villain was encased in a green force bubble from which he could do no harm. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #7

The next time Sinestro returned, he was armed with a yellow power ring created in Qward. The ring was attuned to the Korugarian, and like Green Lantern power rings could communicate with its wearer. In Sinestro's case, it spoke in Korugarian. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #9

It is interesting to note the Qwardians had created the yellow power ring for Sinestro only. One other Qwardian, Power Ring of the Crime Syndicate of Qward had a ring similar to that of the Green Lanterns, but the Syndicate appeared to work outside of the Weaponers' influence. Prior to Sinestro's exile to Qward, the Weaponers had taken a Green Lantern, only to have the ring vanish. It would be years before the Weaponers developed the successful but short-lived Anti-Green Lantern Corps. After the Guardians' departure from our plane of existence, the Weaponers would use anti-Oan energy to create the Poglachian Green Lantern Corps. - Justice League of America #30, Green Lantern Vol. 2 #150, Green Lantern Vol. 3 #11-12

Sinestro had the power ring on his person before his battle in Qward. He used the yellow ring to draw power from the emerald bubble. With the formidable might of the yellow ring, Sinestro returned to confront Hal Jordan.

He had been following Jordan in disguise for a week, slowly drawing power from the green energy. The emerald warrior could not discover why his ring would suddenly lose power.

When Jordan recharged later that day, Sinestro chose that moment to reveal his presence. He trapped Jordan's ring to the power battery, and disguised himself as Earth's Green Lantern. Sinestro planned to infiltrate the Green Lanterns' meeting on Yquem. This was an early step in his revenge against the Guardians.

As "Hal Jordan", Sinestro went unnoticed by the members of the Corps. He used the yellow ring to create a menacing creature which the Green Lanterns had to defend themselves from. Sinestro drew upon their combined power before leaving Yquem.

Jordan had recovered and escaped from Sinestro's prison on Earth. He went straight to Oa, to defend the Guardians. A power ring duel ended when Jordan overloaded Sinestro's ring with energy. The pressure buildup destroyed the yellow ring.

Jordan was soon joined by the other Green Lanterns. They had deduced Sinestro's intent when the menace turned out to be an illusion. The Green Lanterns recharged their rings at the Central Power Battery and, under orders of the Guardians, sealed the renegade in an emerald capsule. Sinestro was exiled into space, on an eighteen billion year orbit of the universe. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #9

Sinestro would escape from the emerald capsule by way of a spare yellow power ring. A short while later, he developed a mind control device which he used on Hal Jordan. The Green Lantern of Earth was compelled to act in manners violating the rules of the corps. Jordan was tried by his fellow Green Lanterns, and although they would not punish him, Jordan demanded to be dismissed from the Corps and banishment to Qward. Despite their confusion regarding their compatriot's strange request, his fellow Green Lanterns complied with his wishes.

In the antimatter universe, Sinestro offered Jordan the chance to join him against the might of the Guardians. The two could then take the Oans' place in the universe. If Jordan would not join, he would be killed.

Members of the Green Lantern Corps tracked Jordan to Qward, suspecting Sinestro's involvement. The renegade was once again captured and imprisoned by his mind control device on an uninhabited planet. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #11

Weeks later, Hal Jordan found himself "jinxed." Strange accidents happened to the test pilot, with potentially fatal results. He surmised it was some outside force trying to attack him. Jordan's concerns were well founded: Sinestro had escaped. The villain had previously commanded the mind control device to work on anyone but him. Knowing Sinestro, Jordan guessed the villain had returned to Qward.

Qward was a feudal society; power was not given, but rather, taken. Ever hungry for more power, Sinestro took part in a challenge designed to prove the Qwardians' mastery of evil. He trapped Jordan on Gryx, an entirely yellow world in the eighth dimension. The very air was yellow, rendering Green Lantern's power ring useless. The inhabitants of that world were hostile to outsiders, and attacked the powerless Jordan. Sinestro returned to Qward, savoring his triumph. The Qwardians wished to see the death of Sinestro's opponent by viso-screen.

The Qwardians did not count on the viso-screen's purplish radiation casting down on the helpless ring wielder. Pursued to the edge of a cliff by the people of Gryx, it appeared to the Qwardians that Green Lantern would die.

Instead, Jordan followed the purple beam by way of his power ring. Back in the antimatter universe, Green Lantern knocked out the gathered Qwardians and fought a power ring duel with Sinestro. Sinestro and Jordan each got in glancing shots but Jordan's stronger will power triumphed. Sinestro was brought back to the mind control device. This time, the device was reprogrammed to command Sinestro never to free himself. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #15

Sent to the planet Kyrba by the Guardians, Green Lantern was surprised when his power ring didn't respond to his command. A power beam missed the emerald warrior's intended target by a wide margin. In the next attempt, Green Lantern was successful but he was disturbed by the incident.

Upon his return to Earth, Green Lantern told the story to his friend, Tom Kalmaku. Tom knew Hal's dual identity and wrote a casebook of Green Lantern's adventures. He wanted to tell Jordan something important when the ring wielder angrily told him to stop talking. The power ring flashed for an instant, freezing Tom in mid-sentence.

The Green Lantern was shocked by his action. Tom was in a trance the power ring was unable to break. The situation was worse still, as the ring had apparently frozen everyone at Ferris Aircraft. Believing he was a menace to his friends, Jordan took off his ring in disgust.

At that moment, an energy projection of Sinestro appeared. It took Jordan and the power ring to Qward. In their previous encounter, Sinestro took precautions in case he was beaten by Jordan. He used his yellow ring to plant a telepathic command in Green Lantern's mind. Jordan's action on Kyrba was a result of that command. The green beam freed Sinestro from the mind control device. Sinestro had then used the device on Jordan, which explained the situation at Ferris Aircraft.

Sinestro had taken Jordan to prove his evil to the Qwardians. He planned to trap Jordan as he had been, many times before. Fortunately, the tables were turned on Sinestro. Jordan captured his enemy, entrapping him in a small cube of amber. It would be a while before Green Lantern had to worry about Sinestro. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #18

Jordan kept the amber cube containing Sinestro in his garage. The cube and its miniaturized prisoner was invisible to all. Jordan also used his garage to house "Goitrude," the old-fashioned taxi cab of Doiby Dickles, friend and confidant of Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott. Dickles had left the cab on Earth when he married and moved to the planet Myrg.

Though Jordan believed the Korugarian was helpless, it was only his body that was imprisoned. Unbeknownst to Jordan, Sinestro's mind managed to tap the power in Goitrude's battery and send out a shock wave that cracked the amber. His mind was able to escape the cube and enter the cab.

Through the taxi cab, the alien's telepathic powers sensed a crime being committed in Coast City and rushed to the scene. As Goitrude, Sinestro told the bank robbers to jump in and escape from the police.

Back at their hideout, the criminals inspected the cab. They could not find anyone hiding in the old cab. The criminals thought it was something out of the old TV show, "Our Mother the Car," but for them it was "Our Mastermind the Car." Goitrude ordered the gang back inside, they were going to pull off another robbery.

Goitrude did indeed keep its word. An armored car was robbed under the instructions of the cab. This caught the attention of two Green Lanterns, Jordan and Scott, who had been looking for the missing taxi cab. The cab's lights shined unusually bright, blinding the emerald gladiators.

The Green Lanterns did not know of Sinestro's involvement in the case of the criminal cab. They called in the only person they could think of that could stop the taxi, its former owner, Doiby Dickles.

After his arrival from Myrg, Dickles joined the Green Lanterns hunting for Goitrude. They did not have to look far, as the cab was hunting them. The headlights blasted the trio, freezing them in their tracks.

Goitrude explained the super-activated photons of the headlights were synchronized with a laser-like beam, paralyzing them by an intense mental onslaught on their nervous systems. The effect would last twenty-four hours, in which time Goitrude's plan would be completed. The criminals stepped back as Goitrude tapped the energy in the power rings of the two paralyzed Green Lanterns.

Energy was drawn from the rings and the old taxi cab exploded. Sinestro stood revealed. The Korugarian had gained weight from the energy diet in the amber prison. Even without the added muscle Sinestro was still formidable: he still had his yellow power ring.

Sinestro stopped to take a dimension-changer from Doiby Dickles. Alan's old friend used that device to travel to Earth from Myrg. Sinestro used the criminals as the nucleus of his personal army.

On far off Oa, the Central Power Battery for the Green Lantern Corps dematerialized. With Doiby's stolen device, Sinestro transported the battery to another dimension, over which the Guardians of the Universe had no power.

A call went out to Green Lanterns across the universe. Jordan heard the message on Earth; he believed Sinestro was his responsibility since he had been the one to imprison his enemy after their last fight. The two Green Lanterns struggled and eventually broke free of Sinestro's latest trap.

The emerald gladiators planned to use their ring together to travel through the dimensional barrier. Doiby Dickles returned to his space-scooter to make another dimension-changer.

In the other dimension, Sinestro had changed his gang to appear as Korugarians. They possessed power rings Sinestro made from the stolen Central Battery. Doiby arrived in the other dimension before the Green Lanterns. He was quite a pilot in his tiny space-scooter, evading capture by Sinestro.

The Green Lanterns made fast work of Sinestro's henchmen. Though they outnumbered the heroes, the "evil Green Lanterns" had little willpower to back up their rings' force.

Sinestro used his yellow ring on Hal while he used a green ring against Alan. There was a tremendous amount of force behind the blasts, and the Green Lanterns had to work together. They fused their rings' two power beams into one, easily bowling over the villain. A solid punch by Jordan put Sinestro down for the count.

The Central Power Battery was returned to Oa. After Sinestro's latest plan, the Guardians were going to deal with Sinestro personally. Alan created a miniature version of Goitrude for Doiby's wedding anniversary while Jordan repaired the real Goitrude. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #52

Sinestro somehow escaped the Guardians to face Hal Jordan. He kept his escape a secret from the emerald crusader by causing Carol Ferris to become Star Sapphire. Jordan forced the Sapphire persona out of Ferris instants before her power teleported him into deep space. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #73

Green Lantern escaped Sapphire's deathtrap and returned to tell her the secret of her dual identity. She changed into the Zamaron queen once more. Sinestro revealed his hand in the transformation. Where Sapphire had failed, together they would both destroy Green Lantern.

During the course of the two against one battle, the twenty-four hour limit on Jordan's ring expired. Jordan was knocked unconscious by a tidal wave. Sinestro planned to drain Jordan's ring of its reserve power, the energy that protected Green Lanterns from mortal harm.

His Zamaron accomplice would not allow the Korugarian to kill Green Lantern. Jordan had been chosen to be her consort. If he refused, Star Sapphire would be the one to kill him. The ex Green Lantern had not counted on her interference.

Despite Star Sapphire's orders, Sinestro could not pass up the opportunity to kill Jordan. Green Lantern's enemies fought amongst themselves. They were evenly matched, but Sinestro did not have much time left on his power.

Badly beaten, Jordan crawled away to retrieve his power battery. The villains thought they had stopped the ring wielder, but they had not counted on the aid of Tom Kalmaku. Jordan's friend brought the power battery to Green Lantern's side.

Sinestro changed his tactics. He played on Star Sapphire's royal feelings. Ever scheming, Sinestro offered himself as consort to the Zamaron Queen. She agreed. If Green Lantern would not be consort, the Korugarian would be an adequate replacement.

Green Lantern recharged his power ring and rejoined the battle. He knew Star Sapphire was being used as a pawn by his old enemy. A well placed power ring blast took the Zamaron out of the fight. Sinestro attempted to take Star Sapphire but Jordan willed her to become Carol Ferris again.

The emerald gladiator turned his attention to Sinestro. Surprisingly, Sinestro gave Jordan his yellow ring. He conceded defeat and suddenly disappeared. The ring vanished along with its master. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #73-74

During Sinestro's next visit to Earth, he could not find Hal Jordan. The villain decided to draw Green Lantern out by attacking the Green Lantern's friends, Green Arrow and Black Canary. Sinestro was aided by his sister, who posed as a witch queen. She lured the Green Lantern into a trap. Through Sinestro's power ring, he was imprisoned in another dimension, inhabited by mythological beasts. Black Canary and Green Arrow overcame the two Korugarians to rescue their friend. Sinestro and his sister were taken into police custody. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #82

Sinestro started working with Earth's super-villains to defeat Green Lantern. He teamed briefly with the Weather Wizard. In exchange for Weather Wizard's creation of a worldwide cloud screen to cover his actions on Earth, Sinestro would handicap the Flash, stacking the odds in the rogue's favor. Weather Wizard could kill the Flash at his leisure.

Fortunately, Green Lantern was on the lookout for Sinestro. He found and defeated the malevolent alien near the site of a disaster involving the Flash. Scanning Sinestro's mind, Jordan learned his foe had used the ring to synchronize Barry Allen's heartbeat to the core of the Earth. Whenever Flash's heartbeat sped up, it caused a disaster to erupt on the Earth's surface. Sinestro had counted on the Weather Wizard killing the Flash and unwittingly destroying the Earth. Fortunately, both villains were defeated and Green Lantern "defused" the Flash's "heart that attacked the world." - Flash #222

Sinestro joined a group of villains led by Zazzala the Queen Bee. The villains succeeded in imprisoning the Justice League of America before Superman intervened and freed his fellow heroes. In the course of the battle, the Man of Steel melted Sinestro's power ring with his heat vision. - Action Comics #443

Dismayed at another failed attempt on Green Lantern's life, Sinestro hired Zoyoz and Kydyk, professional "hero-killers" to eliminate his emerald nemesis. The killers planned to use Superman as a living weapon against Green Lantern.

The first part of their plan involved a number of "attempts" on the Man of Steel's life, and each attempt charged Superman with a buildup of energy. Though it did not have any deteriorating effects on the Man of Steel, the energy emitted a "twinkle" whenever he opened his mouth. Through some investigative work, the Man of Steel learned he would need the emerald energy of Green Lantern's power ring to dispel the energy from his body.

Green Lantern was glad to help his friend, but when his beam touched Superman, another beam of yellow shot back at the ring wielder, striking him down. Zoyoz and Kydyk teleported the body to Sinestro's starcraft.

The renegade was gloating over his victory when Green Lantern sprang up and quickly defeated his foe. On Earth, Superman captured the "hero-killers" as well. He had discovered their involvement but had worked with Green Lantern to root out their employer, Sinestro. The renegade was brought to a prison in deep space. - Action Comics #444

Sinestro later returned to Earth as a member of the Secret Society of Super-Villains. Based in San Francisco, California, the group operated out of the Sinister Citadel. The renegade Green Lantern worked with such super-villains as Captain Cold, Gorilla Grodd, the Mirror Master, and a new Star Sapphire. The villains did not learn until a later date that they were unwitting pawns of Darkseid, the ruler of Apokolips. After his involvement with the Society, Sinestro returned to space. - Secret Society of Super-Villains #1-5

Blish, the Green Lantern of Graxos V, was ambushed by Sinestro at a point where Space Sectors 2814 and 2815 meet. He was rescued by Hal Jordan, at the expense of letting Sinestro escape. Blish had wanted Jordan to capture Sinestro instead of coming to his aid.

Jordan brought Blish to the alien Green Lantern's homeworld while Sinestro went free. The Korugarian headed to Earth, where he plotted to kill Green Arrow to strike at Jordan. The emerald archer struggled free of Sinestro's deathtrap, and Green Lantern arrived in time to defeat their enemy. Groggy from the fight, Jordan simply wrapped the villain in green energy. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #91

Sinestro escaped with yet another yellow power ring. Green Lantern and Green Arrow pursued the renegade through the "Silver Twist," an unexplained space phenomenon which sent anyone entering it into alternate realities.

The travelers found themselves on a world resembling 12th Century England. Sinestro and Jordan were powerless, their rings, electricity, and fire were dampened by a force field created by a tyrant named Prince Yuan. Green Arrow was instrumental in the collapse of the force field, restoring power to the ring wielders. The three travelers went through the Silver Twist once more. Returning to their correct reality, Sinestro was nowhere to be found. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #92

In the time since Sinestro last battled the Green Lantern of Earth, Jordan's alternate, Guy Gardner, had been seemingly blasted to atoms by the explosion of a faulty power battery. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #116

Weeks later, Jordan discovered Gardner had survived. Guy had been blasted into an otherworldly phantom zone. He fought Gardner, who was being manipulated by the wraithlike prisoners of the zone. Although he had to retreat, Jordan soon returned to the zone to free Gardner, only to discover he had been taken to the Antimatter Universe. Gardner was now the pawn of Sinestro. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #122-123

Guy was soon rescued by Jordan, but it was too late for Gardner's mind. The abuse he suffered had left him brain damaged. Gardner would remain in a coma for years before being revived by a splinter group of the Guardians of the Universe. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #123, 190-197

Jordan was angered by the malicious actions of Sinestro and sought to bring him to justice. He tracked Sinestro to Korugar and walked into a death trap. Jordan was assisted by Katma Tui, and was able to strike back at Sinestro before the renegade escaped. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #124

Back on Earth, the Green Lantern laid a trap for Sinestro. He mined the ground surrounding Earth's gateway to Qward with gas bombs. Jordan managed to grab Sinestro's yellow power ring before he could jump back through the gate. The yellow ring wasn't enough, so Jordan followed his foe into the other universe.

The Weaponers created yet another yellow power ring for Sinestro. This ring seemed more powerful than his last, causing Sinestro to misjudge his abilities. It was now Jordan's turn to escape. The Green Lantern of Earth caused the Qwardian fortress to topple on Sinestro. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #125

Jordan soon discovered the recent actions of the Qwardians were a prelude to an all-out assault on Oa and the Guardians of the Universe. He followed the Weaponers through their teleportation device, only to find himself trapped inside the Central Power Battery on Oa. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #126

Sinestro went to Oa, believing he was under orders of the Qwardian General Fabrikant to lead the armies of Qward. The Weaponers scoffed at the renegade Green Lantern. Sinestro had been used by the Weaponers to delay Earth's Green Lantern while the Qwardian forces advanced on Oa.

For years, the Weaponers had seen Sinestro as a paltry tool against the Guardians. He refused that explanation, but deep down he had always known it to be true. The Weaponers continued their assault against the Green Lantern Corps, neutralizing the ring wielders in a yellow energy vortex.

Jordan had freed himself from the Central Battery, but was under attack by the Qwardian forces. He was trapped helplessly in a yellow positronic netting. The bindings tightened, crushing him. Freedom came from an unlikely source: Sinestro.

The former teacher and student were working together once more to aid the Green Lantern Corps. Jordan ordered Sinestro not to kill the Weaponers, only stun them. For once, Sinestro complied.

With the Green Lantern Corps freed from the yellow vortex, the fight was over swiftly. Sinestro, however, escaped once more. The Guardians and the Green Lanterns could not find him. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #127

His next move was to try to infiltrate the Guardians of the Universe themselves. The Oans, despite their great power, could not tell which of them was an imposter. Some sort of interference related to the imposter prevented the Guardians from calling upon the Green Lantern Corps. The Guardians called upon the assistance of Earth's greatest detective, Batman.

Sinestro's involvement was easily discovered by the Batman. The renegade had somehow caused Green Lanterns across the universe to forget the Corps and the Guardians. They did not know they were Green Lanterns. Batman managed to free Jordan of the powerful post hypnotic command. The Guardians brought the two Earthmen to Maltus. Batman required the aid of Appa Ali Apsa, otherwise known as the Old-Timer. The former Guardian would be invaluable to the Dark Knight Detective. - Brave and the Bold #173-174

On Oa, their arrival threatened Sinestro's plans. During his time posing as a Guardian, Sinestro had absorbed a tremendous amount of energy from the Central Battery. With this power, he formed a gigantic knight to crush the interlopers. Though the knight was defeated, Sinestro kept his identity secret.

Working with Jordan and the Batman, Appa Ali Apsa devised a plan to flush Sinestro out. The temperature in the Oans' meditation chamber was secretly dropped by Batman. The Guardians noticed a subtle difference in the room, but could not ascertain the change. The ancient Oans were not affected by the lower temperature, but Sinestro was. His shivering made him stand out from the Guardians.

Despite being found out, Sinestro still had victory in his grasp. He was powerful enough to resist the combined might of the Guardians and by tapping the Central Battery, Sinestro was able to exert mental control over the Guardians. He was ready to hunt down Appa Ali Apsa and the Batman. He was surprised by the arrival of the Green Lantern Corps.

Batman had sent Jordan to gather the Corps. They were cut down by the brainwashed Guardians, and a change of tactics was needed. Appa Ali Apsa suggested a new target for the Green Lanterns. Members of the Corps such as Malet Dasim, Chaselon, and Reever turned their rings on the Central Battery, overloading Sinestro. The renegade reverted to his Korugarian appearance as the backlash tore through him. He was imprisoned once again. - Brave and the Bold #174

Meanwhile, after billions of years of dormancy, the Monitor and the Anti-Monitor of the positive and anti-matter universes both awoke. The time-space distortions of the so-called Crisis on Infinite Earths that quickly erupted was felt across the multiverse. Sinestro was among the many involved in this event. - Crisis on Infinite Earths #5, 7

The Guardians of the Universe were divided on a course of action. Attacked by the Anti-Monitor, some of the Guardians chose their own Green Lantern. Guy Gardner was brought out of his coma to serve the renegade Oan faction. This splinter group of Guardians was blasted by antimatter, killing all save one. The lone Guardian would later give Hal Jordan back his power ring to help their Green Lantern. - Crisis on Infinite Earths #9, Green Lantern Vol. 2 #196

Sinestro worked with scores of villains, attempting to control three of five different Earths. The battle between heroes and villains of five dimensions was cut short by the involvement of the Spectre. - Crisis on Infinite Earths #9-10

As part of the offensive against the plans of the Anti-Monitor, the villains were sent back into time to ancient Maltus. They were halted by the Maltusians before they could prevent the universe-altering experiment of Krona. - Crisis on Infinite Earths #10

Though they had failed to stop the Anti-Monitor, various forces were regrouping to attack on other fronts. Green Lantern Guy Gardner recruited a small army of supervillains to aid in his mission. Sinestro arrived on Earth just after Gardner and Jordan had left to attack Qward. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #197

The Korugarian warned John Stewart and Katma Tui of the danger of Gardner's plan. The destruction of the white spot on the dark moon of Qward would not defeat the Anti-Monitor, it would only result in the destruction of all universes.

Sinestro had learned the Anti-Monitor had returned through time to the moment of creation, to change that moment so that the anti-matter universe alone would emerge from the nexus and the positive matter universes would become a memory, in his mind alone. According to Sinestro, both universes would be destroyed if Gardner's plan came to fruition.

Katma Tui had strong reservations about Sinestro's plan, but John Stewart convinced her of the need to contact the Guardians. Sinestro and Katma Tui combined the power of their rings to propel Stewart across the void to Oa.

Unknown to Stewart, Sinestro followed along the same route as the Green Lantern. He attempted to strike the dark spot on the moon of Oa to cripple the positive matter universe but was stopped by the power of the Guardians.

Through Tomar-Re, the Central Power Battery told the Guardians and the Corps that they were wrong. The battery had learned of the nature of the Anti-Monitor when he had taken control of it. The repository of power explained why the Corps should save the Dark Moon of Qward, the Genesis Point for the Anti-Monitor. The moon's destruction would free the Anti-Monitor from all constraints of the material world. The Green Lanterns set out for the Antimatter Universe to stop Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan's mission to destroy the Qwardian moon. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #198

The Green Lanterns were successful. Elsewhere in the universe, the Anti-Monitor was defeated. The Corps retuned to Oa, to be given various missions by the Guardians. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #198-199

Despite the end of the Crisis, the Weaponers attacked a starship transporting former Guardian Appa Ali Apsa to Oa. The Qwardians were defeated by John Stewart and Katma Tui, but the commanding Weaponer hid a yellow power ring on the Oa bound starship in the moments before his capture.

Sinestro was locked in an Oan Sciencell while the Green Lanterns completed their tasks. Once the starship landed on Oa, Sinestro's mind reached out to the yellow ring. He used the ring to trade forms with Guardian Pazu Pinder Pol, scheming to enter the Guardians' extra-dimensional retreat with their Zamaron mates. The twenty-one other Guardians felt something was wrong as they began their journey. Sinestro was exposed and recaptured. The Guardians and Zamarons left the universe without him. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #200

With his great knowledge of the Guardians' history, he realized he was imprisoned in the same section as MadGod T:D:H:D, the sentient Space Sector 3600. Though he saw this as a means of escape, his fellow prisoners thought Sinestro had lost his mind.

Millennia ago, Space Sector 3600 contained trillions of sentient life forms; they worshipped their gods, making the gods strong. The most powerful god in Sector 3600, T:D:H:D achieved absolute control over 3600. One with the universe, the god became fundamentally unstable, instantly killing all sentients and gods within the sector, including the sector's Green Lantern, Rasa Nekroy. Cimfet Tau, Palaqua, and ten other Green Lanterns were sent to battle the sector. They never returned. It took the might of all of the Guardians to finally contain the sector.

The individual design of each Sciencell made the holding facility virtually inescapable. Despite this, the prisoners could easily be freed by something as powerful as 3600. It was only a matter of will. Sinestro told the Sector hundreds of stories, each tale showing the Sector that its' imprisonment was just an illusion. Sinestro wished to show the imprisoned sector that the Guardians and their Green Lantern Corps were fallible.

The 999th tale was of Penn Maricc, which showed how even the Guardians of the Universe can be mistaken. After this tale was told the sentient sector had its first thought in millennia.

The 1000th tale, of Ghrelk and Varix was to show that the Green Lanterns who use the Guardians' power can also fail. After this tale was told, the sentient sector came alive, if only for a moment.

The 1001st tale dealt with Abin Sur and his corruption by the Empire of Tears. With this final tale, Sinestro was successful. Sector 3600 opened all the Sciencells, but Sinestro quickly escaped and relocked the rest of the cells. His fellow prisoners would have to find their own way out. - Green Lantern Corps Annual #2
