Synopsis:
Alec Holland is employed as a construction worker in Louisiana. Although he is hiding his past as a botanist, he assists his coworker Paul by providing a plant-based home remedy for a sore knee. He claims to have woken up after being dead, with memories of his time as Swamp Thing, including memories of a "white-haired woman". He is visited by Superman and questioned as to his knowledge concerning various mass deaths of animals in several locations.
Superman noticed the death of large populations of birds in his city; Batman noticed the deaths of bats in his cave; and Aquaman viewed a large population of dead fish. Alec claims to have no knowledge, but states that these occurrences happen in nature. Alec indicates that he is no longer actively working as a botanist, having given up on his life's work of creating a substance which would allow plant growth in arid regions (the Bio-Restorative Formula). This is because he fears the violent nature of the plant world.
Meanwhile, an unidentified and unnatural creature resembling a swarm of flies attacks three archeologists in the area. A fly-like creature enters the ear of each victim, and the victim is then seen with a head turned around backward in a zombie-like state. Later, Holland is plagued by nightmares of his death and violent plant life. He wakes from his dream to find his bed covered in plants. He grabs a canister of the Bio-Restorative Formula, and goes outside to throw it into the swamp, but is stopped by the Swamp Thing.
