HISTORY

Final resting place of Abin Sur on the surface of Ungara

Located in Space Sector 2814, the planet Ungara is the home of an advanced and peaceful society. Ungara has a number of different continents, and native Ungarans are known to have life spans of over 150 years.

Over one hundred years ago, Ungara was threatened by an armada of alien criminals, led by Devlos Ungol of Tartarath, better known as Traitor. The alien Green Lantern Starkaor defended Ungara, dispersing Traitor's armada and driving off the villain, but at the expense of the ring wielder's life. Before death, Lantern Starkaðr chose history teacher Abin Sur as his successor. - Legends of the DC Universe #20

The Green Lantern Starkaðr arrived to defend the helpless world from the armada's advance. This was the first time Traitor fought someone his equal and the battle was so fierce, Traitor's armada broke up, fleeing in fear. Traitor was too badly damaged to continue the fight and he escaped as well. His foe, Starkaðr, was mortally wounded and fulfilled his final duty, conferring the power ring to Abin Sur of Ungara.

Abin Sur would go on to become a formidable Green Lantern, spending most of his time away from his homeworld. During his time as a Green Lantern, he became mentor and friend to Sinestro of Korugar, Green Lantern of Sector 1417. A fateful rescue mission to the planet Ysmault led Abin Sur on a quest to save the universe from the prophecy of the Blackest Night. Abin Sur was slain by Atrocitus before he could prevent the birth of the black. He chose Hal Jordan of Earth as his successor.

Years later, when Hal Jordan tried to warn the populace of a comet on a collision course with Ungara he was greeted with mistrust. They could not detect the comet as their sensor equipment was derived from Abin Sur's power ring and did not register the yellow-hued comet. When Jordan advised them Abin Sur was dead, they jumped to the conclusion Jordan was Sinestro, who had since become a renegade, and that he had murdered their Green Lantern. After they finally recognized the threat of the oncoming comet, they realized Jordan was speaking the truth. Jordan used Ungara's moon to deflect the comet. Once Ungara was safe, Jordan made a monument to Abin Sur for the people of Ungara. Green Lanterns Katma Tui-Stewart, Kilowog and Tomar-Re would later visit Ungara to pay their respects to the fallen Lantern. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #107, Green Lantern Vol. 3 #17

The news of Abin Sur's death fragmented Ungaran society, leading to civil war. Once side created the plasma satellite, a weapon meant to rain havoc over enemy states. While the opposing forces tried to defuse the satellite, it was accidentally detonated. Over one hundred million Ungarans perished in ground quakes as the planet was thrown off its axis by less than one hundredth of a degree.

Desperate to save their world, the Ungarans sent a military expedition to seize Hal Jordan's aid. In their desperation, they took the Green Lantern by force. Jordan had been dealing with problems on Earth and did not know of the Ungarans' plight. General Kam tried to kill the Lantern and take his power ring, but was unsuccessful. They were unable to explain their plight before Jordan went back to Earth.

Jordan was soon ordered to Ungara by the Guardians of the Universe. Jordan was unable to move the planet back to its original orbit as tidal waves drowned three of Ungara's continents leaving no survivors. Attempts to break the ice by using molten lava also failed. Covered in ice, the planet finally settled into its new orbit.

Hal Jordan together with Arisia, the Green Lantern of Graxos IV in Sector 2815, polished a crystalline moon to act as a lens to focus the Ungaran sun. The attempt was marred by an attack from the Qwardian St'nlli who kidnapped Jordan. Alone, Arisia re-positioned the lens (presumably in a stabilized LaGrange point) to prevent Ungaran from being set aflame. The grateful Ungarans rescued the exhausted alien Green Lantern who had given their world perpetual spring. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #148-#150

Though there is no longer an Ungaran Green Lantern, others have stepped up to protect their homeworld such as the law enforcement organization known as the Ungaran Light Brigade. Meta-powered individuals have been cataloged, including the 'mighty' Scutor and his partner Retiarii. How successful Scutor has been could be a matter of debate, as he lost his helmet with built-in translator and his meta-cycle in a bet against Half-Life, a member of the dimension hopping rave known as the Event Horizon. Indeed, the Event Horizon had only appeared on Ungara so Kindred Marx could recruit Retiarii. - Green Lantern Vol. 3 #162, Green Arrow Vol. 3 #24, Superboy and the Ravers #6

In all his years off-world, Abin Sur never knew he had a son, Amon Sur. Angered by feelings of abandonment by his father the legendary Green Lantern, Amon Sur set out to make a name for himself. He rose to power in the interplanetary Black Circle Syndicate. Amon Sur killed or was responsible for the deaths of many Green Lanterns. - Green Lantern Vol. 3 #171-#174, Green Lantern Vol. 4 #14-#17

Well over a century since his last attempt, Ungara was once more threatened with destruction by Traitor. He never made it to the planet's surface. This time Traitor was defeated by Green Lantern of Earth Kyle Rayner. - Legends of the DC Universe #20

Hal Jordan has recently returned the mortal remains of Abin Sur to Ungara, changing the monument he created years before to make reference of Abin Sur's fatherhood. - Green Lantern Vol. 4 #17
