<h3>Character listings (categories)</h3>
{{Help:Character_appearances}}

Character listings are grouped into seven categories: Feature Character(s), Supporting Character(s), Guest Star(s), Villain(s), Guest Appearance(s), Other Character(s) and Cameo appearance(s).
{{Help:Character_chronology}}

*'''Feature Character(s)''' is for the character(s) to whom the title of the feature refers. Back-up stories can have feature characters that would normally count as supporting characters in the title.
<!--

<h2 class=guide>Wikifying the old DCU Guide</h2>
*'''Guest Star(s)''' is for characters regularly featured in other DC comics, who appear in a major role in the story.

*'''Supporting Character(s)''' is for characters who appear frequently in stories with the Feature Character(s) or Guest Star(s). A visiting supporting character from another book would be listed under supporting characters, or if the appearance is very brief under guest appearances.

*'''Villain(s)''' is for the antagonists of the story or any of the heroes' usual antagonists that appear in the story even if not appearing in opposition to the Feature Character.

*'''Guest Appearance(s)''' is for characters from other DC Comics, but only in minor roles. A guest appearance may be very brief; even a one-panel or an off-panel appearance, such as in a telephone conversation counts, as long as the character is physically present in the story.

*'''Other Characters''' is everyone else of note. Generally characters are only listed if named. Characters who never appear in another story after their first appearance and do not play any real part in the story might be omitted as well, unless their appearance is somehow deemed noteworthy.

*'''Cameo appearance(s)''' is for characters that do not actually appear in the story, but whose images are seen for example as statues, or in flashbacks to stories previously published. This category might not be complete for all indexed books as these appearances have generally not been included in the indexes in the past.

'''Behind the scenes''' describes characters who don't physically appear in the story, but whose influence is felt, as, for example, when a Villain works through agents. Another example could be a mention of another characters actions during the story (as long as this action is related to the story itself). In other words references to what is going on in other books do not count but a mention that a character is assisting on the actual case does. Furthermore, an off-panel appearance that can be determined by the same scene being shown in a different book counts as well. Behind the scenes "appearances" can be listed in all categories but need to be specified as (behind the scenes).

<h3>Character listings (linked and non-linked characters)</h3>

All characters should be in '''bold''' type which you get by adding ' three times before a text and three times after, like this <nowiki>'''bold'''</nowiki> (Note: If using the Character Link template the names will automatically appear in bold type)

Add one name per line and add colon : in front of each name.<br>

:Examples using the Character Link template ([[:Template:A]]):<br>
:<nowiki>: {{a|Batman (Dick Grayson)}}</nowiki> results in: {{a|Batman (Dick Grayson)}}<br>
:<nowiki>: {{a|Batman (Dick Grayson)}}</nowiki> results in: {{a|Batman (Dick Grayson)|Dick Grayson}}<br>
:<nowiki>: {{a|Batman (Dick Grayson) | Batman III}}</nowiki> results in: {{a|Batman (Dick Grayson) | Batman III}}<br>

Please use the correct identity for the issue in question. The above examples should only be used in issues taking place during the time when Dick Grayson was operating as Batman. For appearances during his time as Robin use variations of <nowiki>{{a|Robin (Dick Grayson)}}</nowiki>.

If the link does not not appear to be active it might be that a redirect needs to be added. Follow the missing link and create a new page linking to the currently active page as in the example below.

:<nowiki>#REDIRECT [[Batman (Dick Grayson)]]</nowiki><br>
:<nowiki>[[Category:{{WhoCat}}|Robin I (Dick Grayson)]]</nowiki>

<nowiki>[[Batman (Dick Grayson)]]</nowiki> should be changed to the name of the page for the current identity of the character (for Dick Grayson the current identity would be Batman (his last superhero identity prior to the New52 reboot))<br>
<nowiki>[[Category:{{WhoCat}}|Robin I (Dick Grayson)]]</nowiki> which indicated where the character should be listed in the Who's Who. The "I" after Robin indicates which version of the character it is. This is done to sort the characters chronologically in the Who's Who. If only one version of the character exists, the second line can be omitted.

The Character Link template is a new addition to the Guide and many indexes will have characters listed using regular wiki linking such as <nowiki>'''[[Nightwing (Dick Grayson) | Nightwing II]]'''</nowiki>. This is not incorrect but usage of the Character Link template is encouraged as it gives greater functionality.

Unlinked character are listed in regular wiki format as seen below:<br>
:<nowiki>: '''John Doe'''</nowiki> <span class="note">[For an unlinked character]</span>

<h3>Team listings (linked and non-linked characters)</h3>

Teams are named above the team members. Add ": " in front of the team name and ":: " in front of each member name.<br>

:Example using the Character Link template ([[:Template:A]]):<br>
:<nowiki>: {{a|Green Lantern Corps}}:</nowiki><br>
:<nowiki>:: {{a|Arisia}}</nowiki><br>
:<nowiki>:: {{a|Kilowog}}</nowiki><br>

As with the regular character links old links using the regular format may appear in pages that have yet to be updated.

<h3>First appearance listings</h3>

If a story marks a character's first appearance add (first appearance) after the name and if it is a superhero or villain with a secret identity add both his "real name" and "first appearance" like this.<br>
:<nowiki>: {{a|Robin (Dick Grayson) | Robin I}}</nowiki> (Dick Grayson; first appearance) <span class="note">[For a linked character]</span><br>
:<nowiki>: '''John Doe'''</nowiki> (first appearance) <span class="note">[For an unlinked character]</span>

<h3>Chronological listing of last/next appearances</h3>

When adding last/next appearances for a character please follow these "rules" for consistency:

*All last/next appearances should be last/next chronological appearance in the character's timeline, which is not neccesarily the same as the publication order of the books.
*Do ''not'' add last/next appearances for appearances in the issue directly preceding or following the issue in question.

*For appearance in earlier or later issue of the same title use this format (with ? reprecenting the issue number):<br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (last in issue #?) <font color="#c0c0c0">[For appearance in an earlier issue of the same title]</font><br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (next in issue #?) <font color="#c0c0c0">[For appearance in a later issue]</font><br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (in between issue #? and #?) <font color="#c0c0c0">[For appearance in between two issues]</font><br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (last in flashback in issue #?) <font color="#c0c0c0">[For appearance in a flashback in an earlier issue]</font><br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (next in flashback in issue #?) <font color="#c0c0c0">[For appearance in a flashback in a later issue]</font><br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (in between flashback in issue #? and flashback in issue #?) <font color="#c0c0c0">[For appearance in between flashbacks]</font><br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (in between flashback in issue #? and issue #?) <font color="#c0c0c0">[For appearance in between flashback and later issue]</font><br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (in between issue #? and flashback in issue #?) <font color="#c0c0c0">[For appearance in between earlier issue and flashback]</font><br>&nbsp;Note that in the last two cases "issue" is used in front of both issue numbers to make it very clear that both appearances are not of the same type.

*Last/next appearances in other books should aside from the exeptions mentioned below use the same basic format as above with the addition of the title (and volume if more volumes exist) of the book like this:<br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (last in <nowiki>''Title''</nowiki> Vol. ? #?)<br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (next in <nowiki>''Title''</nowiki> Vol. ? #?)<br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (in between <nowiki>''Title''</nowiki> Vol. ? #? and #?) <font color="#c0c0c0">[For appearances in between two issues of another title]</font><br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (last in issue #?; next in <nowiki>''Title''</nowiki> Vol. ? #? and #?) <font color="#c0c0c0">[For appearances issue of current and another title]</font><br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (last in <nowiki>''Title''</nowiki> Vol. ? #?; next in issue #?)

*For the very first chronological appearance of the character in a flashback (if this is not also the actual first appearance of the character) use:<br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (chronologically earliest appearance in flashback)

*Flashbacks: In basic use the same rules as above exept add "flashback" to the mix, like this:<br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (in flashback following issue #?)<br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (in flashback preceding issue #?)<br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (in flashback in between issue #? and #?)<br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (in flashback in between flashback in issue #? and issue #?)<br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (in flashback in between flashback in issue #? and flashback in issue #?)<br>&nbsp;<nowiki>: '''Character'''</nowiki> (in flashback in between flashback in <nowiki>''Title''</nowiki> Vol. ? #? and flashback in issue #?)

 Editors Manual

The purpose of this manual is to have easy access to the important templates needed when making new pages as well as being a place to discuss the need for new templates and categories. Discussions and/or questions should be written on the Discussion page and what we decide will then be added to the main page.

Note: This page is currently a bit out of date and will be undergoing a big update to structure the page better. Please comment on the Discussion page what you think should go into this manual.

Comic Indexing

Comics are indexed using the following two templates: Template:Comic and Template:Story

Template:Comic holds the main info about the comic such as Title, Volume, Issue No., Cover Date, Price as well as Cover information (link to cover image, cover credits and so on). See the template for more information on the various fields.

Template:Story holds all information regarding that particular story: Credits, Character appearances (including information like "first appearance", a short description, and "last" and "next" appearances of each character), Comments regarding the story and synopses. See the template for more information on the various fields.

Character Appearances

Character listings (linked and non-linked characters)

All characters should be in bold type which you get by adding ' three times before a text and three times after, like this '''bold''' (Note: If using the Character Link template the names will automatically appear in bold type)

Add one name per line and add colon : in front of each name.

Examples using the Character Link template (Template:A):
: {{a|Batman (Dick Grayson)}} results in: Batman
: {{a|Batman (Dick Grayson)}} results in: Dick Grayson
: {{a|Batman (Dick Grayson) | Batman III}} results in: Batman III

Please use the correct identity for the issue in question. The above examples should only be used in issues taking place during the time when Dick Grayson was operating as Batman. For appearances during his time as Robin use variations of {{a|Robin (Dick Grayson)}}.

If the link does not not appear to be active it might be that a redirect needs to be added. Follow the missing link and create a new page linking to the currently active page as in the example below.

#REDIRECT [[Batman (Dick Grayson)]]
[[Category:{{WhoCat}}|Robin I (Dick Grayson)]]

[[Batman (Dick Grayson)]] should be changed to the name of the page for the current identity of the character (for Dick Grayson the current identity would be Batman (his last superhero identity prior to the New52 reboot))
[[Category:{{WhoCat}}|Robin I (Dick Grayson)]] which indicated where the character should be listed in the Who's Who. The "I" after Robin indicates which version of the character it is. This is done to sort the characters chronologically in the Who's Who. If only one version of the character exists, the second line can be omitted.

The Character Link template is a new addition to the Guide and many indexes will have characters listed using regular wiki linking such as '''[[Nightwing (Dick Grayson) | Nightwing II]]'''. This is not incorrect but usage of the Character Link template is encouraged as it gives greater functionality.

Unlinked character are listed in regular wiki format as seen below:

: '''John Doe''' [For an unlinked character]

Team listings (linked and non-linked characters)

Teams are named above the team members. Add ": " in front of the team name and ":: " in front of each member name.

Example using the Character Link template (Template:A):
: {{a|Green Lantern Corps}}:
:: {{a|Arisia}}
:: {{a|Kilowog}}

As with the regular character links old links using the regular format may appear in pages that have yet to be updated.

First appearance listings

If a story marks a character's first appearance add (first appearance) after the name and if it is a superhero or villain with a secret identity add both his "real name" and "first appearance" like this.

: {{a|Robin (Dick Grayson) | Robin I}} (Dick Grayson; first appearance) [For a linked character]
: '''John Doe''' (first appearance) [For an unlinked character]

Character Chronology

Chronological listing of last/next appearances in comic indexes

When adding last/next appearances for a character please follow these "rules" for consistency:

  • All last/next appearances should be last/next chronological appearance in the character's timeline, which is not neccesarily the same as the publication order of the books.
  • Last/next appearances in the issue directly preceding or following the issue in question have not been added in the past, but in order to make it easier to follow a character's appearances from book to book these will be added going forward.
  • For appearance in earlier and/or later issue of the same title:
: '''Character''' (last in issue #?) [For appearance in an earlier issue of the same title]
: '''Character''' (next in issue #?) [For appearance in a later issue]
: '''Character''' (in between issue #? and #?) [For appearance in between two issues]
: '''Character''' (last in flashback in issue #?) [For appearance in a flashback in an earlier issue]
: '''Character''' (next in flashback in issue #?) [For appearance in a flashback in a later issue]
: '''Character''' (in between flashback in issue #? and flashback in issue #?) [For appearance in between flashbacks]
: '''Character''' (in between flashback in issue #? and issue #?) [For appearance in between flashback and later issue]
: '''Character''' (in between issue #? and flashback in issue #?) [For appearance in between earlier issue and flashback]
Note that in the last two cases "issue" is used in front of both issue numbers to make it very clear that both appearances are not of the same type.
  • Last/next appearances in other books should aside from the exeptions mentioned below use the same basic format as above with the addition of the title (and volume if more volumes exist) of the book like this:
: '''Character''' (last in ''Title'' Vol. ? #?)
: '''Character''' (next in ''Title'' Vol. ? #?)
: '''Character''' (in between ''Title'' Vol. ? #? and #?) [For appearances in between two issues of another title]
: '''Character''' (last in issue #?; next in ''Title'' Vol. ? #? and #?) [For appearances issue of current and another title]
: '''Character''' (last in ''Title'' Vol. ? #?; next in issue #?)
  • For the very first chronological appearance of the character in a flashback (if this is not also the actual first appearance of the character) use:
: '''Character''' (chronologically earliest appearance in flashback)
  • Flashbacks: In basic use the same rules as above exept add "flashback" to the mix, like this:
: '''Character''' (in flashback following issue #?)
: '''Character''' (in flashback preceding issue #?)
: '''Character''' (in flashback in between issue #? and #?)
: '''Character''' (in flashback in between flashback in issue #? and issue #?)
: '''Character''' (in flashback in between flashback in issue #? and flashback in issue #?)
: '''Character''' (in flashback in between flashback in ''Title'' Vol. ? #? and flashback in issue #?)

Linking to issues

To properly link to the issues in question use the following templates:

Template:c (Comic Name Standardization Template) for links to issues in a different series or when linking to flashbacks etc.
Template:last, Template:next, and Template:between for links to previous and/or later issues within a series (except flashbacks and behind the scenes links)

See below for proper usage.

Please note

Linking to a specific story within an issue only works with (Template:c). Use regular wiki format in other cases.

The {{last}}, {{next}}, {{between}} template does not know when the 1,000,000 numbers fit into the series so links to those issues will have to be defined.

Linking to issue in a different series (Template:c)

This template automatically corrects comic names in links to the standards used in the Guide, making it easier for users to linking to other books.

The template should be used as follows:

{{c|Comic Title Vol. X #Y}} with X being replaced by the Volume number and Y being replaced by the issue number. Volume number can be listed as vX, Vol X or Vol. X)

Important! Always include the number sign # when using the template. Input {{c|Superman Vol. 2 #1}} and not {{c|Superman Vol. 2 1}}. Also use regular wiki linking [[Superman Vol. 2 1|''Superman'' Vol. 2 #1]] in title indexes.

Examples

If the volume number is not defined it is assumed to be Volume 1 and the volume number will not appear in the link title.

Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold #3}} results in: Booster Gold #3

When the volume number is defined it stays in the result. Other examples of correct use:

Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold Vol 1 #3}} results in: Booster Gold Vol. 1 #3
Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold Vol 2 #3}} results in: Booster Gold Vol. 2 #3
Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold Vol. 1 #3}} results in: Booster Gold Vol. 1 #3
Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold Vol. 2 #3}} results in: Booster Gold Vol. 2 #3
Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold Vol. 2 #21/2}} results in: Booster Gold Vol. 2 #21/2

Link with Display Name defined (works with all of the above formats):

Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold Vol. 2 #3|link text}} results in: link text

Linking to previous issue in same series (Template:last)

This template automatically adds a link to the previous issue of a title, unless another issue is defined. Only to be used in indexes for linking to the last previous appearance of a character in same title.

The template should be used as follows:

{{last}} for links to the previous issue of a title. The text "last in issue #" will automatically be added before the link.
{{link|Issue No}} with "Issue No" being the issue number of the title that you want to link to. The text "last in issue #" will automatically be added before the link.

Examples

Basic linkage:

Inputting: {{last}} in the index for Green Lantern Vol. 4 #10 results in: "last in issue #9"

Linkage with "Issue No" defined:

Inputting: {{last|5}} in the index for Green Lantern Vol. 4 #10 results in: "last in issue #5"

Linking to later issue in same series (Template:next)

This template automatically adds a link to the next issue of a title, unless another issue is defined. Only to be used in indexes for linking to the next appearance of a character in same title.

The template should be used as follows:

{{next}} for links to the next issue of a title. The text "next in issue #" will automatically be added before the link.
{{next|Issue No}} with "Issue No" being the issue number of the title that you want to link to. The text "next in issue #" will automatically be added before the link.

Examples

Basic linkage:

Inputting: {{next}} in the index for Green Lantern v4 #10 results in: "last in issue #11"

Linkage with "Issue No" defined:

Inputting: {{next|15}} in the index for Green Lantern v4 #10 results in: "last in issue #15"

Linking to previous and later issues in same series (Template:between)

This template automatically adds a link to the previous and next issue of a title, unless another issue is defined. Only to be used in indexes for linking to the previous and next appearance of a character in same title.

The template should be used as follows:

{{between}} for links to the to the previous and next issues of a title. The text "in between issues #XX and #XY" will automatically be added, with XX being the previous issue of the series and XY being the next issue of the series.
{{between|Issue No1 and Issue No2}} with "Issue No1" being the previous issue number and "Issue No2" being the next issue number of the title that you want to link to. The text "in between issues #XX and XY" will automatically be added with XX being the issue number defined by "Issue No1" and XY being the number defined by "Issue No2".

Examples

Basic linkage:

Inputting: {{between}} in the index for Green Lantern v4 #10 results in: "in between issues #9 and #11"

Linkage with "Issue No1" and "Issue No2" defined:

Inputting: {{between|5 and 15}} in the index for Green Lantern v4 #10 results in: "in between issues #5 and #15"
Please Note: If defining previous and next issues both issues need to be defined. " and 15" and "5 and " will not work. Instead use "9 and 15" if you need to link to the the previous issue and the 5 issues later for instance.
