HISTORY

In his efforts to destroy the Lord of Order known as Kismet, and take her place as the Illuminator of All Realities, the former Lord of Order known as Dominus had to draw out his foe from hiding. Using Superman as a focal point, Dominus created four divergent realities in which the Man of Steel was a hero in four different time periods.

Unaware of the deception, Superman believed himself to be a native of each of these realities. In one such reality, he was the Superman of the year 2999 AD where he worked with the Green Lantern of that era.

A member of the legendary Green Lantern Corps, the protector of Space Sector 2814 was given the power ring in the year 2687. Over his 312 years of service, the Green Lantern developed many allies outside of the Corps, most notably the holder of the title of "Superman." The Green Lantern of the year 2999 AD has claimed to have worked with the past three Supermen, and has even joined for many family events, such as the christening of Kara, the sister of the nineteenth Superman.

In 2999 AD, Earth found itself under siege by the robotic forces of Muto. Muto was born human but when he and his parents were drawn through a warp door to a dimension where only robots existed, the mechanical beings experimented on the infant, giving him their intellect, telekinetic and transdimensional powers and a total intolerance of biological lifeforms.

The European Union and the African Alliance had already fallen as the newest Superman was fighting over two thousand robots in Metropolis. Green Lantern arrived with Aquaman and the Bat to help turn the tide of battle. An incendiary bomb melted the robots while Green Lantern, assisted by Aquaman, used sea water to put out the blaze. Green Lantern rescued Superman from the deadly sea water and they retreated to the Fortress of Solitude.

Muto was able to track them there by following the energy trail of Green Lantern's power ring. Once there, he was able to capture the gathering of heroes. The villain enjoyed competition and gave Superman a chance to defeat him. The future Man of Steel sat opposite his foe at a game board featuring pieces shaped like the Bat, Aquaman, Supergirl, Green Lantern and himself. His allies sat around the table as well, unable to move. Moving the Green Lantern piece caused the Green Lantern to vaporize in a glow of purple energy.

Muto's satisfaction was short lived as Lena Luthor disrupted the game by shooting Muto with an energy weapon. The heroes tried unsuccessfully to defeat their powerful foe until Green Lantern reappeared and encased Muto's head in an energy construct. Before he had been "vaporized," Green Lantern had been saved by a transport beam operated by Luthor which took him to safety on the other side of Fortress. The robots on Earth, now leaderless, were easily defeated and then gathered up by Green Lantern.

It was shortly thereafter that Kismet revealed Dominus' machinations to the true Superman who was able to return to his true reality. The future world of 2999 AD as well as the Green Lantern of that reality have not been seen since. - Superman Vol. 2 #137

GLCWP NOTE

The Superman 2999 AD story told in SUPERMAN 2nd series # 136-138 was based on "The Superman of 2965" which first appeared in SUPERMAN # 181 (November 1965) and again in ACTION COMICS # 338-339 (June-July 1966) and WORLD'S FINEST COMICS # 166 (May 1967). These stories, when reprinted were revealed to have occurred in 2465-2466.

Obviously, the story of the Green Lantern of 2999 AD conflicts with the history of 30th Century Legion of Super-Heroes. There is no mention of the 30th Century's premiere hero team in either the Superman 2965 (2465) or 2999 stories.
